Fundamentals of Fashion and Visual Merchandising
(FVM 301)

Students will explore and learn the basics of fashion and visual merchandising fundamentals on this course. This subject will cover conceptual design elements and principles through the overall planning of fashion retail displays, which involves: one, two and three dimensional design elements, layout of merchandise spaces and their compositions, placements, scale proportions, repetition, flow, harmony and retail ascendancy. The use of colour, textures and lighting are to be inspected. Fashion garments, accessories, make-up, products and furniture are to be studied in their planning displays of retail output. Students will need to explore the use of branding, signage and graphic displays within stores.  Students will need to understand how a fashion consumer experiences their surroundings and research existing retailer brands from these points and how visual merchandising impacts customer behaviors, items promoted and sales. Students are expected to analyze existing merchandise feature displays and their aesthetic approaches. How seasons and event cycles are approached towards visual merchandising of items will be explored.
